PURPLE REIGN: 2018 Colour of the Year

It is an utter shame that the highly talented mauve-magician, His Purple Highness, Prince left our world two years ago, the musical industry mourns the loss of a true musical icon. 

The irony of this is that he isn’t around to witness the reign of his ultimate colour-crush: Purple. A colour he wore with pride and sang with a sensual passion not heard of before or since.

The uber-talented colour aficionados at Pantone took a long, hard look into their crystal ball and announced that 2018 would be the year dedicated to this dramatically provocative purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet.  

Like all colour trends, Ultra Violet symbolises more than just a colour of the spectrum. It communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future. Complex and contemplative it suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own and the enigma of tomorrow. We will see abstract nebulas, swirling galaxies and starry constellations in wall covering, art and textiles.

The deep enigmatic and spiritual nature of the colour purple has also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of this colour to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality and of non-conformity. It is a colour vested strongly in the rebellion of the creative spirit.

Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to the colour purple. The colour is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection. We will see rich layered fabrics, comfortable bohemian spaces, mandala and tessellated paisley patterns and a spiritual awareness through health and fitness. So pull up your yoga mat and get comfortable in your own skin, 2018 is all about a mantra of mystical mindfulness and heavenly hedonism. Prince would be so proud!
